As with all Vihtavuori rifle powders, N170 grains are of the cylindrical, single-perforated extruded type. With a length of 1,7 mm and a diameter of 1,1 mm, the grain size is relatively large.

As a very slow burning reloading powder, N170 is a top choice for very large capacity cases such as the .300 Weatherby Mag. and .300 Remington Ultra Mag. and also offers good performance in most of the belted Magnum cartridges. The N170 powder is used by reloaders in shooting disciplines such as long-range big-game hunting and target shooting
